Disk 06

Appearance

This is another Memorex Cool Disk, which are delightful with their translucent cases. This one is a purple; it kind of reminds me of the translucent game boy color that was purple. I have that, somewhere. I can't find it, but I know it's here. It has all the standard features of the Cool Disks, which is mostly that color scheme and the embossed dust cover, as well as being 2SHD and very proud of it.

It's labeled "Buck's Papers." And all I can tell you is that it is not my handwriting. Far fewer of these disks are mine than I had expected.

Contents

This disk is another unfortunate one that I am going to try to open through a virtual machine. Right now, all I can get is one text file, entitled "Imhookedonphonics.text". I can tell you right now that this one isn't mine, because I always hated phonics. You can tell by the second stanza this is nothing I would ever write. Hooked on Phonics didn't help me at all. In fact, I would argue that it actively hindered me.

Hookedonphonics.txt

Oh....Yeah, yeah...
Everytime a book's around me
Cover, pages, and the spine
I just need someone to help me
I can't seem to read a single word or line

I've never saw a game that helps me like you do
Keeps my reading skills in control
I can read the books up and down
Readin' books high or low (Woh yeah)

Hooked on phonics, it's all in logics (logics)
I study hard, but like it like it
Hooked on phonics, no annidotes or tonics (tonics)
Can't give it up, I'm hooked on phonics

You know I'm hooked on phonics... woh yeah...

I can't believe what it's done to me
All the books I've read laying on the floor (laying on the floor)
Now I like to read, so sue me
I could never read before (Never read before)
No no

Can't stop reading, yeah I've tried (I've tried)
My eye's really hurt now baby
Paper cuts all on my hands
Want to stop, but I can't let go (woh yeah)

I'm hooked on phonics, it's all in logics (logics)
Now it's bad, I don't like it like it
I'm hooked on phonics, worse than alchoholics (alchoholics)
I want to give it up, but I'm hooked on phonics

Don't like it like it, oh no....

I'm hooked on phonics I can see
that books are not the things for me
Sure, I could read while in the stall
Or maybe the bookstore at the mall
But books are not my true love
That's something I can get enough of
Maybe I should try studying chronologics
Because baby, baby, I'm hooked on phonics

Nothings ever hurt me, as much as you do (you do)
It's kind of sad, never like it like it
I'm hooked on phonics, it's all in logics (logics)
Can't give it up, I'm hooked on phonics
Hooked on phonics, worse than alchoholics (alchoholics)
It's real bad, I can't strike it, strike it
I'm hooked on phonics, no annidotes or tonics (tonics)
Can't give it up, I'm hooked on phonics

After a lot of searching, I am able to open some of the other files, but the bad news is that most of the file is corrupted, and the snippets that I do get are still corrupted, but they are readable. Kind of. I tried my best. They really are readable it's just difficult to do.

Author's note: It really looks like these past 2 are the same file, just with different names. On the same disk. That strikes me as odd.

jordan print this one.wps

Going through this, I realized it was identical to the file "bucklessinterview.wps". With identical corruption, more or less. There were no more than a few letters on either side and I didn't feel like it was worth the work of replicating. Just look at bucklessinterview.wps and this is identical to that.

But the next file is where it gets really interesting. I think I salvaged this one compltely. And, I think it, also, is IDENTICAL to some of the other files, essentially giving us the entire interview.

I am interviewing Mr. Les Burgett, whom was the Sheriff of Perry County from 1994 until 2003.

1: Mr. Burgett, why did you decide to be sheriff?
A: Well, in 1990 I ran for jailer of Perry County and won. I served as jailer and enjoyed working for the good people of Perry County. I just felt like I could do more as sheriff. Also, the jail was getting older, and I didn’t know when a new one would be built. There were a lot of problems with overcrowding and the building was just old and outdated. The water lines and sewer had leaks. We had made a lot of improvements, and I felt that I had done all I could do at the jail. I felt that there were a lot of changes that could be made in the Sheriff’s Department, and I enjoy a good challenge.

2: What were some of the changes that you made?
A: Well, for starters I sent all of my deputies to the academy. I wanted each man and woman trained as well as they could be. We also started 24-hour parole. We were the first to have a Chaplin and a Department Detective. We utilized our grant program and applied for funds. We also had a k-9 unit, which was a first for the Perry County Sheriff’s Department.

3: Does Law Enforcement sometimes seem like a thankless job?
A: Well, there are a lot of good people out there who want law enforcement. But, there are always some who do not respect our profession. But, I do think that 98% of the people want to feel safe and realize that there have to be laws in place and that they have to be enforced.
One of the things that my department tried to do was good public relations. We used to have a lot of neighborhood watch programs and meet with a lot of people. For example, my administration was the first to have a deputy full time at our high school. He would work with the kids and try to be available to them if they wanted to talk or had any problems. It worked out really well. The kids really like him.

4: What lies ahead in the future of law enforcement?
A: Well, in many ways, I feel that they will be able to help more with the new technology that’s becoming available. Also, it appears that different agencies are working better together, sharing information with one another. Things like fingerprints, DNA, etc are now enabling the offices to do more detailed investigations. And that is the key to tracking a lot of these people down. As for theft, I feel like the drug problem has to be dealt with first because the two are very much related. But just more manpower on the streets, numbers and presence deter crime. The bottom line is: we need more police, deputies, etc.

Thank you, Les Burgett.

The following is an interview conducted with Mr. Les Burgett, who was the Sheriff of Perry County from 1994 until 2003.

1: Mr. Burgett, what made you decide to run for sheriff?
A: Well, in 1990 I ran for Jailer of Perry County and won. I served as jailer for four years and really enjoyed working for the good people of Perry County. However, the jail was old and outdated, and I didn’t know when a new one would be built. The water lines and sewers lines had leaks and there were electrical problems. The doors had been painted so many times that they would sometimes stick when we tried to open or close them.
There were also a lot of problems with overcrowding. There was just not enough room or beds to handle the volume of inmates that was normally there.
I feel like we made a lot improvements, but I just felt that I had done all I could do at the jail I just felt like I could do more as sheriff. I felt that there were a lot of changes that could be made in the Sheriff’s Department, and I enjoy a good challenge.

2: What were some of the changes that you feel you made at the Sheriff‘s Department during your administration?
A: Well, for starters, I had all of my deputies academy trained. We started 24-hour parole. We were the first to have a Chaplin and a Department Detective. We also had a K-9 unit, which was a first for the Perry County Sheriff’s Department.

4: What lies ahead in the future of Law Enforcement?
A: Law Enforcement is evolving more and more everyday. With the technology that is becoming available, different agencies are better able to work together by sharing information with one another. Things like fingerprints and DNA are now enabling the officers to do more detailed investigations, which is the key to tracking a lot of these people down. The more people that we have working on these cases and looking for these criminals the quicker that we can get these crimes solved.
